Updated: January 25, 2014 13:33 IST Charleston, South Carolina: A student who was shot outside a dormitory at South Carolina State University died on Friday as authorities searched for four suspects believed to be involved in the shooting, officials said.
Police said the male student was shot around 1:30 p.m. EST (1830 GMT) on the campus of the historically black college in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
Officials have not identified the victim or the suspects. Authorities are still investigating a motive for the shooting, said University Police Chief Mernard Clarkson.
The frequency of shootings at schools and universities in the United States is fueling a national debate over gun control. The latest attack follows a shooting death at Purdue University earlier this week and shootings at high schools and middle schools in recent weeks.
University President Thomas Elzey turned emotional as he announced the student died several hours after the incident.
"South Carolina State University is saddened today because of the loss of one of our students," he said. "He was a very nice young man and it hurts. It hurts us all."
The university said a lock down imposed after the shooting was lifted, but warned students to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to police, according to the school's Twitter feed.
The four suspects were believed to have left the campus, Clarkson said. Police have identified one suspect but do not know the identities of the other suspected assailants, officials said.
South Carolina State University has an enrollment of about 3,200 students. Orangeburg, a city of nearly 14,000 people, is located some 75 miles (120 km) northwest of Charleston.
The shooting was the latest in a rash of gun attacks at schools across the United States.
On Tuesday, a male student was shot and stabbed to death in a classroom at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The day before, a student was shot and critically wounded outside an athletic center at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia.
Last week, two students were shot at a high school in Philadelphia, another was shot at a high school in Georgia, and two students were shot at a middle school in New Mexico.

Three dead after shooting at US mall
Updated: January 25, 2014 23:56 IST Columbia, Maryland: Police in Maryland say three people died on Saturday in a shooting at a mall in suburban Baltimore, including the presumed gunman.
Howard County police said via Twitter that a shooting took place at the Mall in Columbia, a suburb of both Baltimore and Washington.
Authorities received a call to the police emergency dispatcher at around 11:15 a.m. from someone reporting that shots had been fired. Police responded to the scene and found three people dead, including one person who was found near a gun and ammunition.
Police said they believed that one of the people found dead was the shooter. There was no other information available about the two other people.
The scene was "believed to be secure" police said in a tweet released at about 12:36 p.m.
The mall, which is at the centre of the town, typically opens at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and it was not known how many shoppers or workers might have been present at the time of the shooting.
Joan Harding of Elkridge, Maryland, was shopping with her husband, David, for a tiara for their granddaughter's 18th birthday. She said she heard something heavy falling, followed by gunshots and people running.
"My husband said, 'Get down!' and the girl that worked in the store said, 'Get in the back,' " Harding said. That is where they hid until police gave the all-clear.
Witnesses said they heard a succession of gunshots fired near the food court on the first floor of the mall.
People were directed out of the mall and into a parking lot, where some boarded a bus and others walked toward their cars. Some people were seen crying.
Laura McKinzles of Columbia works at a kiosk in the mall. She said she heard between eight and 10 gunshots, followed by people running and screaming. She ran into the backroom of a perfume store and locked the door.
